Shri K.S. Narayan
Former Principal IHM Jaipur
Academic & Admin experience in Hospitality Education: - (2009-2020)

• Your views on the course curriculum of the then Hotel management course relevant to the status of the then Hospitality Industry during your period.
1. The curriculum was in vogue from 2002 to 2020 and even now. 50% irrelevant to the Hospitality industry requirement. 2. Ideally curriculum should be revised every 4-5 years after two to three batches have passed out 3. The year wise curriculum prevalent till 2009. When semester system was introduced in 2009, the year wise curriculum was split into two equal parts with no connection between theory & practical. 4. By 2020, the curriculum has become completely irrelevant.

• Views on the Quality of the students joining the Hotel Management course during your period.
1. The quality of students from 2002 to 2012 were still focused on the industry 2. The Quality of students from 2012 till 2020 were average with not much keen to be in the industry. 3. Hotel Management is still not a career which is sought after, hence the quality of students joining the course are not really suited for the industry. They are joining the course to work in other sectors rather than Hotel Industry.

• Views on the admission method into the Hotel Management, during your period.
1. Application, NCHMJEE, Online counselling based on ranks obtained in NCHMJEE 2. Number of students applying for the course steadily increased so also the number of colleges under NCHMCT.

• Views on the quality of teachers in the IHMs (elaborate about skill and managerial competencies during your period.
1. Some of the teaching faculty (Passed out after 2005) have joined the institute as it is a Govt. job 2. Quality of teachers who have passed out pre-2000 are much better focused than those who passed out post 2005. 3. There is absolutely no managerial competencies with most of the teaching faculty. 10% of the teachers have managerial competencies. 4. Skills are average They are also not keen in honing up their skills.

• Views on the availability of the adequate infrastructures in the IHMs.
1. Infrastructure was built as per OBC reservation in 2012 but as the number has increased due to EWS, infrastructure is inadequate. 2. Except for new infrastructure which was created in 2012, the other areas have in- adequate infrastructure which requires up-gradation.

• Views on the learning attitude of the students
1. 15% of students have keen learning attitude. 2. Since, the curriculum is not tough enough, the students are able to pass the course easily sans knowledge and skills. (It also reflects the attitude and skills of the teachers). 3. Teachers, administrators, Industry professionals are the role models. When they show lack of attitude towards learning, the same reflects in the students too.

• Views on the placements of the students
IHM Jaipur has about 60-70% placement record. Majority of the students are opting for Retails, QSR, BPOs, other sectors only about 25% opt for Hotels but they have also left the hotel industry in about 2-3 years maximum.

Views on present Hospitality education 2019 onwards

• Views on the student’s admission method to IHMs
1. Since 2019, the enrolment number of students are reducing 2. The online admission process is simple but good students do not get admission because of reservation system prevalent. 3. Since, reservation system is here to stay, the students in general category who are very good are not in a position to get admission in good central institutes, they are opting for other courses. 4. There should be reforms to be brought about to attract the best of students to make their career in hospitality Industry.

Since the curriculum is in vogue since 2002, my views have already been expressed in the previous page.

• Views on the quality of the present students getting admitted.
My views have already been expressed in the previous page.

• Views on learning attitudes of the students getting admission
My views have already been expressed in the previous page.

• Views on the competencies of the teachers.
My views have already been expressed in the previous page. Due to Covid pandemic, Online Teaching became the norm, hence the technological and communication skills of teachers have improved for the better.

• Views on the curriculum delivery.
1. For almost 18 months, Online teaching was prevalent with only demonstration of practical component through online mode, both students, teachers were quick to get acclimatized with this mode. 2. However, for delivery content, purchase of high end software was necessary by institute which were using Google Forms, Zoom, Webex etc. 3. The teachers require precise training in online delivery of content with special reference to use of technology.

• Views on the placement of the students.
1. My views have already been expressed in the previous page. 2. The prospective passed out students of 2020 & 2021 are the worst affected by the employment opportunities which have dwindled and majority of the students have chosen alternate careers especially Retail, Online shopping, Entrepreneurs, Setting up cloud kitchens as a start-ups.

• Views on the online theory classes.
1. The online teaching took the centre stage for almost 18 months and in all probability it will be partly retained in future for delivery of theoretical content. 2. However, hotel management course curriculum need to updated to present day standards as lot many operational changes have taken place post pandemic. if the curriculum is not changed now, the course will further deteriorate with practical no connection between academia and hotel operations 3. The students as well as the teachers need to be trained as to how technology can be used to better their knowledge and application. 4. there are great many applications, online references available for honing the theoretical and practical knowledge.

• Views on the online theory term -end examination and its effectiveness & sanctity.
Since Practical examinations were practically not possible to be held, the assessment was done on the basis of Online mode of examinations through Google forms. this was okay for theoretical component. 2. Practical Component was needed to be designed differently.

• Views on the Hybrid model of curriculum delivery (Practical classes offline and theory class online) in ihms.
1. Today, only Hybrid models will be successful where practical component delivered offline and theoretical content delivered online. 2. World over, the hybrid model was in practice to certain extent but for limited period.

• Views on the future of the hospitality skill/ management education considering impact of the Covid -19
1. The online teaching took the center stage for almost 18 months and in all probability it will be partly retained in future for delivery of theoretical content. 2. The students as well as the teachers need to be trained as to how technology can be used to better their knowledge and application. 3. There are great many applications, online references available for honing the theoretical and practical knowledge 4. Since the effect of Covid is waning away, offline classes should be in practice with Theoretical component delivered online and Practical component offline.
